Some legends are remembered because they sought fame.  Annie Oakley became a legend because she mastered her craft.

Born into poverty in rural Ohio, Annie used her remarkable marksmanship to help support her family as a young girl.  Her extraordinary talent eventually carried her onto the world stage as the star sharpshooter of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show.  Along the way, she shattered expectations, proving that determination, discipline, and quiet confidence could open doors few women of her time were ever given.

This original portrait is part of my Legends of Grit collection—a series honoring women whose resilience and courage helped shape the American West.  Through bold color, layered textures, and expressive line work, I reinterpret these remarkable historical figures in a contemporary style while celebrating the strength that made them unforgettable.

Because legends aren't defined by perfection or fame, they're forged by perseverance.
