Some legends are remembered for the lives they lived.  Others are remembered for the lives they helped save.

Born Martha Jane Cannary, Calamity Jane became one of the American West's most recognizable figures.  While stories about her have grown into legend, one truth remains clear—she was known for her resilience, independence, and willingness to step into difficult situations when others would not.  Whether scouting, riding alongside soldiers, or nursing victims during a smallpox outbreak, she built a reputation for courage in a world that offered few opportunities for women.

This original portrait is part of my Legends of Grit collection—a series honoring women whose perseverance and determination helped shape the American West.  Through bold color, layered textures, and expressive line work, I reinterpret these remarkable historical figures in a contemporary style while celebrating the strength that continues to inspire today.

Because legends aren't born, they're forged through grit.
