Legends of Grit Collection

Some legends are remembered for the battles they fought.  Others are remembered for the people they refused to leave behind.

Lozen was an Apache warrior, strategist, and trusted companion to her brother, Chief Victorio.  Revered for her courage and leadership, she rode alongside Apache warriors to defend her people during one of the most difficult chapters in their history.  Stories passed down through Apache tradition describe her as possessing remarkable spiritual insight that helped guide and protect those traveling with her.

This original portrait is part of my Legends of Grit collection—a series honoring women whose resilience, sacrifice, and determination helped shape the American West.  Through bold color, layered textures, and expressive line work, I reinterpret these remarkable historical figures in a contemporary style while celebrating the strength that continues to inspire today.

Lozen's story reminds us that true leadership isn't about power.  It's about using your strength to protect others, even when the cost is great.

Because legends aren't born, they're forged through grit.
