Stagecoach Mary
Legends of Grit Collection
Some legends are remembered for blazing trails. Others are remembered for never failing to show up.
Born into slavery and later known as Stagecoach Mary, Mary Fields became the first African American woman to work as a U.S. mail carrier. At a time when both her race and her gender limited opportunities, she earned a reputation for strength, determination, and unwavering reliability. Through harsh winters, rugged mountain roads, and long days on the frontier, Mary delivered the mail no matter the conditions, becoming a beloved figure in the Montana community she served.
This original portrait is part of my Legends of Grit collection—a series honoring women whose resilience, sacrifice, and determination helped shape the American West. Through bold color, layered textures, and expressive line work, I reinterpret these remarkable historical figures in a contemporary style while celebrating the strength that continues to inspire today.
Stagecoach Mary's story reminds us that greatness is often found in the simple act of faithfully showing up, day after day, no matter the obstacles.
Because legends aren't born. They're forged through grit.
